Sargo took a leap in developing internal communications: “The Piiri app was exactly what we were missing”
Sargo employs over 70 people at the Lahdenperä boat factory in Kokkola and the Öja carpentry workshop. The boats, which are mainly handmade, are shipped all over the world. Last year, the company introduced the Piiri application to support internal communications.
— Last year, we had discussions about developing internal communications and planned to install information screens in our production facilities as a solution. However, it did not seem like a viable option and the matter remained unresolved, says Petri Wikström, Sargo's Chief Operating Officer.
During a spinning class, Wikström received a recommendation from an acquaintance about Piiri.
— Jonathan Fröjdö from Tara-Element praised Piiri and sent a link to Piiri's website. I got acquainted with app and thought that this is exactly what we are missing. With Piiri, we could improve our internal communication.
Sargo launched the Piiri app before Christmas.
— The concept has seemed to work, even though we are still in the early stages of implementation. The application offers many features and possibilities, Wikström says.
In addition to Wikström, management assistant Sara Sarin is very satisfied with the ease of use of the Piiri application, both from the administrator's and the user's perspective.
— Producing content for Piiri is really easy because the operating system is so logical, Sarin and Wikström praise.
The majority of Sargo's staff work in production. Wikström, who leads production, says that the company uses the 5S method based on the lean ideology, which aims to involve staff to improve the quality and efficiency of the work environment.
— We go through current issues in weekly meetings and collect feedback from employees. The personnel is divided into different meetings, so before Piiri was implemented, the information reached the employees at different times, Wikström says.
In addition to weekly meetings, internal communication was handled on bulletin boards, and there was no possibility for real-time communication before Piiri was implemented.
"It makes my job easier when I no longer have to run around the break rooms with lists."
According to the 5S method, all ideas, feedback and, for example, procurement requests from employees are recorded. When 100 items are recorded on the list, the company rewards the entire staff with pizza or kebab.
Managing the reward event has also become considerably easier with the Piiri application.
— I'll create a questionnaire in Piiri that employees will answer. It makes my own work easier when I no longer have to run around the break rooms with lists, Sara Sarin says with satisfaction.
— In addition, we handle registrations for the work wellness days through Piiri, collect holiday wishes and share current news, Sarin continues.
Boats around the world
The Sargo factory produces 60–70 boats per year, which are shipped all over the world. The company manufactures all-season boats suitable for all weather conditions and seasons.
— The intention is that one and the same boat can be used in a fish processing factory in Norway or as a pleasure boat in Monaco. However, this is not a work boat, but a high-quality and elegantly decorated pleasure boat, with no compromise on comfort, Wikström describes.
Sargo's most important markets are Japan, New Zealand, the United States and Europe. Less than 10% of the boats produced annually are shipped to Finland.
