Baltic Yachts centralised internal communications with Piiri – the entire staff can now be reached simultaneously in four languages across two countries
The Piiri app has streamlined internal communications at Baltic Yachts by bringing news, instructions and onboarding materials together in one place. The entire staff in Finland and Spain is reached simultaneously, and the multilingual app supports smooth everyday life in an international work community.
Boat manufacturer Baltic Yachts is the world’s leading builder of large composite sailing yachts. Employing around 250 people, the company has crafted luxury sailing yachts for international markets for over 50 years.
Last year, the company wanted to develop internal communications within its multilingual work community and implemented the Piiri app.
– We wanted to make sure we could reach the entire staff quickly and simultaneously with the same message. Good communication is important in every company, says Elin Näse, HR Manager at Baltic Yachts.
As an example of an everyday communication challenge, Näse explains that before implementing the Piiri app, it was difficult to communicate effectively about something as simple as an upcoming staff briefing.
– It often comes down to communicating the basics.
One simple channel for news, surveys and important files – with digitalised onboarding as a bonus
Previously, Baltic Yachts’ internal communications relied heavily on email, which failed to reach all employees.
– Most of our staff don’t have a work email address, and we didn’t want to use personal email addresses for communication. Info screens felt outdated. We received a recommendation for the Piiri app from another company, and from the very first meeting it seemed easy to use and well suited to our needs, Näse summarises.
According to Näse, the biggest benefits of Piiri have been clearer communication and easier onboarding of new employees. The implementation went smoothly, and the company has received only positive feedback from staff.
– Now we have one place where we can store all staff handbooks and instructions that need to be accessible to the entire workforce. We also handle onboarding through Piiri, and we are really very happy with the app.
As a welcome additional feature, Näse highlights the easy-to-use survey tool, which can be used to find out staff preferences for summer and Christmas gifts, for example – with responses exported directly to Excel. The feature the company uses most is news, published three to five times a week.
– Recently, for example, we posted a news item to staff about old lumber from the warehouse being sold.
Multilingual communication and respect for time off as key benefits of the new app
Baltic Yachts implemented the Piiri app in summer 2025, and later invited the company’s staff in Spain to join as well. The majority of Baltic Yachts’ production is based in Pietarsaari, with an additional office in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
The company uses Piiri in four languages: Swedish, Finnish, English and Spanish. Content is published in all four languages, and each employee sees the content in their own working language.
Before the implementation, a Spanish language version was added to Piiri, along with minor development work to manage language versions of attachments.
– It was extremely important for us to be able to communicate with our staff in these languages. In Spain, legislation restricts contacting employees during holiday or sick leave. That alone was a strong reason to move away from WhatsApp to Piiri, Näse says.
Each user can mark themselves as away from work in Piiri, which prevents work-related push notifications from disturbing their time off. All users also have the option to use Piiri as a browser-based version, which Näse considers a valuable alternative.
– It’s great that everyone can choose whether to download the app on their phone. In our case, almost everyone has the app on their phone – only a few use the browser version.
