“All information is in one place” – Asfalttikallio reaches over 450 employees with the Piiri app
How do you keep internal communications running smoothly when hundreds of employees are working across Finland? Asfalttikallio found the answer in the Piiri app – and now the entire staff receives the same information at the same time, delivered straight to their phones.
Asfalttikallio uses the Piiri app as a shared communications channel where employees can find all the instructions, news, and other employment-related information they need. The change has been well received.
– Through Piiri, employees now receive company-wide announcements, monthly newsletters for the entire staff, and updates on new ways of working. The best part is that we can now share all of this with everyone at the same time, says Asfalttikallio’s Communications and Marketing Specialist Tuija Salmi-Koukkunen.
Before the Piiri app was implemented, Asfalttikallio had no functional system for reaching all employees, according to Salmi-Koukkunen. If a supervisor forgot to pass information along, some employees could be left in the dark about shared matters.
– We could only send text messages through the payroll system, and even that was cumbersome. Our employee pulse surveys gave us a clear signal that we needed some kind of channel to reach staff. The office staff had an intranet, and we were figuring out how to get the other workers included in the internal communications – for which the Piiri app turned out to be the solution, Salmi-Koukkunen explains.

Push notifications reach employees in the field – Asfalttikallio publishes several updates a week in Piiri
Asfalttikallio is a fully Finnish company that employs over 600 people across Finland during the season. The company provides asphalt paving and earthworks services to both private homeowners and public-sector clients. Its operating area stretches from Hanko to Kilpisjärvi.
The company chose Piiri as its internal communications channel primarily because of the app’s ease of use.
– Piiri is really easy and straightforward to use. The menu takes you straight to the most important things, and a quick look around is all it takes to find everything essential. The Piiri team helped us add our employees during implementation, and that went smoothly too – since then, we’ve managed the administration just fine on our own, summarises Salmi-Koukkunen.
For her, it was important to shape Piiri so that it reflects the company’s identity and suits its needs. The new communications app also helps guide employees to other systems the company uses.
– We created a section in Piiri for quick links, such as the reporting systems for safety, quality, and positive observations. That way, they’re always easy to find. The Our Company section looks great in our brand colours, and it’s now easy to keep all permanent instructions up to date there.
According to Salmi-Koukkunen, the most used feature in Piiri is news, with several updates published per week especially during spring.
– We share reminders about safety matters, instructions, and training materials, for example. News is our most important and by far most used feature. It’s also great that users receive push notifications on their phones.
According to Salmi-Koukkunen, the Piiri app is an effective communications tool especially for companies where employees do mobile work and don’t see each other in the same break room every day.
– Everyone always has their phone with them out on the road and in the field. Employees rarely come into the office, so an app on the phone is the only workable option for sharing information when work is done on the move across Finland.
