Oy Varax-Products Ab is an experienced and reliable partner in subcontracting in the metal industry. The company has over 40 years of experience in the manufacture of pipe and sheet metal products, and its versatile production serves everything from small components to large, surface-treated and packaged units. But what happens when a strong industrial player meets modern tools of digital communication?
Varax wanted to develop internal communications and better involve its personnel. Pekka Laurila, who works with HR and development work, says that before the Piiri application, they used a traditional bulletin board and information display, which were time-consuming to update and limited communication to only the most essential matters.
"With Piiri, communication has increased because it's so easy. I no longer have to run to the bulletin board with papers – in a few minutes I can get a message out to the entire staff," Laurila describes.
The introduction of Piiri in the autumn of 2023 brought with it a new kind of culture of openness and community. Almost everyone in the staff actively use the app, and information now flows directly to their mobile phones – whether it’s information about a new employee, a strategy update or a notice about buns being served with the afternoon coffee.
“If a new person starts to work for us, I can introduce them through Piiri. That way, the team gets to know them even before they start,” Laurila says.

Communicating about small everyday matters has become a significant part of the life of the work community. Piiri is used for sharing news, organizing polls about for instance party menus and registration to different events. This creates an experience of participation and the opportunity to influence.
“It has a big psychological impact when employees feel like they get to be involved in decision-making – even if it’s a small matter.”
Piiri has made everyday life smoother. Laurila emphasizes ease and accessibility:

The company's important documents, such as strategy, personnel plan, and orientation materials, are now centrally and easily accessible to employees through Piiri.

Using Piiri has helped Varax communicate more openly and inclusively. It has increased the amount of feedback, strengthened the cohesion of the work community, and brought a touch of humanity and humor to everyday life.
“This was a good investment. We all benefit from it”, Laurila summarizes.
